Orz (also known as OTL) is an emoticon used to express one’s feeling of hopelessness in jest, often as a result of failure. The text visually represents a person kneeling on the ground with face down; “O” represents the head, “R” as the arms and “Z” as the torso. In East Asian cultures, the shape of “Orz” resembles a body gesture that signifies frustration or feeling of despair, typically as a result of one’s own failure though it can be used to convey frustration towards others similar to facepalm.

  • Orz，又称作失意体前屈，是一种源自于日本国的网络象形文字(或心情图标)，并且在2004年时在日本国、中华人民共和国、香港与台湾俨然已经成为一种新兴的网络文化。 失意体前屈，原本指的是网络上流行的图释：＿|￣|○。看起来像是一个人跪倒在地上，低着头，一副「天啊，你为何这样对我」的动作，虽然简单却很传神。 在初期的时候，并没有人对这个符号起个名字，失意体前屈也是后来才出现的， 据说是某个餐厅的座垫上绣着这五个字，至于再之前又是谁想到的，就不可考了。 后来，又有人发现，用简单的三个英文字也可以表现这个动作，于是Orz就开始流行了。后来，更有Orz的日志软件、日志网站！ 这种文字可以写作Orz、oro、Or2、On_、Otz、OTL、sto、Jto、○|￣|_等，但其中以“Orz”最为常用；并有混合型，表示无可奈何的“囧rz”。原始用意带有“悔恨”、“悲愤”、“无力回天”等的含意，最明显的用法就是在于被甩(失恋)的时候。 Orz随着使用的广泛，其涵意逐渐增加，除了一开始的KUSO与无可奈何或失意之外，开始引申为正面的对人“拜服”“钦佩”的意思。另外也有较反面的“拜托！”“被你打败了！”“真受不了你！”这类意思的用法。台湾摇滚乐团五月天于2005年8月发表的歌曲《恋爱ing》就有“超感谢你，让我重生，整个Orz”一句。
