Dry Bowser's Castle is the 8th fortress level in The Mushroom Kingdom. The stage itself is a composite of the fortress levels of Super Mario Bros. It uses tiles from both the 8-bit and 16-bit version of the game, the 8-bit tiles being shaded to 16-bit quality. Dry Bowser's fortress has many retro references. It includes Super Mario Bros. 1 loop puzzles and many of the enemies are skinned to look like their 8-bit SMB1 design, shaded to 16-bit, of course.

However, it is not the real Bowser; just a skeletal clone. He's a minor character, an old fossil representing a cameo of a retro style of Bowser and his castle. Even his defeat references the original games, as the player must trick him into destroying the floors, as in Super Mario Bros. 3.
