Shortlees is a housing estate 5 miles south east of Kilmarnock town centre. It was mostly built in the 1950s on farmland and conatins 1600 cottage flats and houses. In 1990 it was found to be one of the 30 most deprived areas in Scotland. 72% of its inhabitants were on benefits and 1/5 of Scottish Homes housing stock were found to be defective. Demolition of 58 flats were carried out in 1988 and regeneration has been ongoing since.
