Kate then returned to Washington, D.C. and applied to join the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia. After completing the entire application process, she went on to the Metropolitan Police Academy. Upon graduating from the Police Academy, Kate was assigned as a patrol officer to the Second District Station. Two years into her career as a police officer, she applied to join the Emergency Response Team. After completing the selection process and basic training course, Kate was assigned to the Emergency Response Team as an entry team member. In that capacity, she was part of a specialized tactical unit responsible for responding to critical incidents such as hostage situations, barricaded persons, and high risk warrants. Kate eventually rose to the position of entry team leader. She later decided to pursue a career with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. After successful completion of the FBI application and hiring process, Kate left the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia after eight years on the force and went on to attend the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia. Upon graduating from the Academy, she was sworn in as a Special Agent and assigned to the Phoenix Field Office in Arizona. Due to her tactical experience, Kate was immediately assigned to the Kidnap Response Team. Shortly after reporting to the Phoenix Field Office, she began dating a fellow FBI agent named Evan Sheridan. A little over a year after joining the Kidnap Response Team, Kate became the team leader. Soon after that promotion, her and Evan married. A couple of years later, Kate and Evan legally separated and filed for divorce. Less than a year later, their divorce was finalized. A few months after her divorce, Kate led a raid of a hideout occupied by suspected Mexican drug cartel kidnappers in Chandler, Arizona. During the raid, the Kidnap Response Team discovered dozens of corpses. In the aftermath of that incident, Kate joined an inter-agency anti-cartel task force ostensibly assembled by the United States Department of Defense.
