John R. MacGowan served in the United States Army during World War II. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his actions during the Battle of Buna-Gona. MacGowan was serving with the 128th Infantry Regiment, 32nd Infantry Division. The division was made up of units from the states of Michigan and Wisconsin, the latter of which was MacGowan's home of record.
