Enigma tales are a form of Cardassian literature with a focus on mystery and detective stories. Shoggoth wrote several enigma tale novels, at least one of which was adapted into a holosuite program. Elim Garak had introduced Julian Bashir to enigma tale novels by 2371. Bashir was not a fan, as he disliked the way they ended with the suspects all being guilty. Garak believed that was part of their appeal, as the objective was to discover who was guilty of what. (DS9 episode: "Distant Voices")

Rugal Pa'Dar was initially confused by enigma tales but came to enjoy them, especially during the summer. Pa'Dar particularly enjoyed those set in country houses during the time of the Cardassian Second Republic. (DS9 novel: The Never-Ending Sacrifice)
