The university is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Region V competing in the Heart of America Athletic Conference. Baker offers 19 sports, men's sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis, track & field and wrestling; while women's sports include basketball, bowling, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track & field and volleyball. In 1890 Baker University won a 22-9 victory against the University of Kansas in the first intercollegiate football game to take place in Kansas. Since 1978 women have been competing in sports at Baker.[citation needed] Emil S. Liston, former Baker basketball, football and baseball coach, helped create the NAIA and the first national basketball tournament. Baker's stadium is now named in his honor. Charlie Richard, the late former football coach, is honored in the College Football Hall of Fame for his success at Baker.
