From October 1 to December 31, 2013, The Jim Henson Company and Grosset & Dunlap of the Penguin Young Readers Group accepted writing submissions to find the author for a new novel set in the world of The Dark Crystal. The new novel is said to be "a prequel story set at the time of the Gelfling Gathering, between the Second Great Conjunction and the creation of the Wall of Destiny." To help assist the authors in their writing, Henson created an extensive online encyclopedia at darkcrystal.com that encapsulates everything known about the world of The Dark Crystal.

Lee from Saint Paul, Minnesota. The top five entries, including Lee's winning submission, were released in a special e-book collection in June 2014. The novel version of Lee's story, Shadows of the Dark Crystal, was released in June 2016.
