However, that didn't happen, as the Republican Party's popularity plummeted after the nomination of Donald Trump in 2016, which allowed the Tea Party has been slowly absorbing Republican voters and local formerly Republican politicians. By 2018, they had gotten big enough to block Republicans from winning any Senate elections. A multitude of existing Republican senators also switched to the Tea Party, including then-Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnel and then-Senate Majority Whip, John Cornyn. This election was also very controversial, as it was the first time in US history when the leader of the biggest party in the Senate isn't the Majority Leader. Hillary Clinton's unpopularity meant the Democrats also lost seats, preventing them from having an outright majority. This Senate also had the most political parties of any senate in US history, with 5 political parties in the Senate. By far the most controversial election was in Utah, where Romney's son Josh beat Jon Huntsman Jr by 281 votes. Huntsman demanded a recount, and Utah governor Gary Herbert accepted. The recount happened, and Josh won by 10 votes, the closest margin in US Senate history. Huntsman supporters accused Josh Romney of election fraud in a Utah court case that could mean the end of a potential Romney Dynasty. This election was also historic because it was the first Senate Election where the leader of the largest party was not the Majority Leader, as the Republicans and Tea Party were caucusing together, giving them a combined majority.
