Entre las mejoras frente a los antiguos modelos se incluyen nuevos procesadores, una nueva palanca analógica (Botón C), dos gatillos adicionales (ZR y ZL), mejoras en la visión 3D, soporte para tarjetas microSD y compatibilidad con NFC (y por tanto Amiibo) integrado, al igual que cambios de diseño menores.
