abstract	The first recorded use of the coat of arms is from 1450, when it was used along side the similarly designed seal of Féichthbhann Ó Dhéase which showed the sun above a wild sea. It is thought that the city watch used to wear a cloak bearing the coat of arms. Originally associated with the city of Féichthbhann Ó Dhéase, it was adopted by the newly formed baronetcy of Féichthbhann Ó Dhéase in 1799. The coat of arms survived the subsequent changes in the constitution of the baronetcy, with several baronetcies being annexed between 1850 en 1970. It was eventually adopted by the newly formed baronetcy of Tir na Féichtbhann in 2000, following the biggest change in baronetcial territory in its history. This meant that the coats of arms of the other baronetcies were officially voided, though the baronetcy council decided to reinstate them as city and village coat of arms in 2002.
