The Scarlet-cheeked Woodpecker was a species of woodpecker native to the continent of Atlantis. It was closely related to the ivory-billed and imperial woodpeckers of Terranova. The scarlet-cheeked was approximately the size of a raven with the males having a scarlet crest along with its cheeks while the female had a black crest. During John Audubon's 1843 excursion to Atlantis, he shot a female woodpecker specimen. This he preserved after doing a marvelous sketch which formed a basis for his fine painting in an update of his Birds and Viviparous Quadrupeds of Northern Terranova and Atlantis.
