  • The Sydney Star Observer is a gay and lesbian newspaper in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It contains local, national, and international coverage related to gay and lesbian matters. Non-specifically gay and lesbian items, such as music and film, real estate, and classifieds, are also covered. The newspaper is published weekly and distributed free-of-charge to gay and lesbian community outlets such as pubs, shops, and community centers. Subscriptions are also available. Distribution, although focused on Sydney, covers all of Australia. At time of writing distribution numbers are quoted by the newspaper at over 30,000 copies per week, the highest of any gay and lesbian newspaper in the country. Weekly columnists include Andrew M. Potts, Voting with Vanessa Wagner, Drugs with Paul Dillon, and drag identities Maxi Shield and Hans Sparrow. The newspaper first went to print in 1979 under the name The Sydney Star. In May 2007, the paper's board announced that Scott Abrahams would take over as publishing editor. In October 2007, SSO joined several other publications in every mainland state to form the Gay and Lesbian Australian Media Alliance (GLAMA), to improve support for the many community organizations that rely on the publishing houses to get messages out.
