On June 20, 2014, news outlets began reporting that Johnson had been tapped as the writer and director of Star Wars: Episode VIII The Last Jedi. These reports were confirmed by a spokesperson for Johnson on June 23, 2014. Some of the story ideas and elements for Claudia Gray's novel Bloodline came from Johnson himself. He filmed a cameo appearance in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
