At the Battle of Five Armies he wields a pair of great Elven swords, designed to be wielded double-handed, but so beautifully weighted and balanced that each can be wielded with one hand. All of Thranduil's movie weaponry is the result of artistic license, as J.R.R. Tolkien never described Thranduil's armaments in the books.
