The Mobile Crane was originally released in 1984. It is based on a prototype vehicle by Faun, and the casting has roots in another Faun vehicle, the Faun Quarry Dump Truck, which provided the chassis and base of this model, with minor changes. Another Matchbox vehicle, the 1976 Crane Truck, donated the crane cab, boom, and hook.

  • The Mobile Crane is a three axle tractor unit fitted with an extendible 'cherry picker' behind the cab. It is used to gain access to high places in areas of limited manoeuvrability. It is a pod vehicle from the Supermarionation series Thunderbirds.
  • The Mobile Crane is a red six-wheeled pod vehicle stored in Pod 3. It is used to reach hard-to-get-to places. Its elevated platform unit can reach heights of upto about 50 feet. It incorporates a gyroscopic stabiliser. This enables the crane platform to remain level regardless of the stanchions' height or angle. The wheels are about the height of a fully-grown human, if not taller.
  • Outwardly identical to a standard Mercury Nine high-speed fire appliance, the Mobile Crane is a vehicle used primarily to lift rescue personnel up to around 35 metres to reach the upper floors of tall buildings, the tops of tall trees, and transmitter masts. International Rescue have fitted a gas turbine engine similar to that installed in FAB 1 to allow the vehicle to reach incidents at ultra-fast speed. It can be used to match the speeds of moving vehicles such as the Crablogger, to gain access to topside entry hatches in an emergency. A gyroscopic stabiliser maintains the extended platform at extended levels.

Its crane stanchions can raise up to 90° from horizontal while keeping the platform level with the ground. A lower crane stanchion support brace locks the crane in position when the vehicle is moving or when only the upper stanchion is used. The crane platform remains level regardless of the height or angle of the crane stanchions. An access hatch from the cabin leads to the crane platform and steps to ground level. The cabin has an ergonomically simplified centrally-positioned driver's console. Behind the driver's seat is additional seating for crane platform operators.

The cabin has a radio microphone for communication purposes. When the mobile platform unit is not in use, the support beam lowers down and the mobile platform unit rests on the roof of the vehicle, just behind the cabin. Behind the seats in the cabin is an access door that leads to the mobile platform unit. There are also steps on the right side of the vehicle that lead down to the ground. Just to the left side of the cabin is a grille for the purpose of air intake and is built to filter dust and debris. A few feet behind the grille is a searchlight for when the Mobile Crane is used in dark environments. At the rear of the Mobile Crane are ducts and outlet filters used for exhaust purposes.
