Mining companies attempted to take over the island to access these minerals, but local tourism operators demanded that the island remain industry free. The mining company lost the battle in court but secretly sent contractors disguised as tourists to take as much as possible and sell them illegally. Ocia Island remained a tourist destination even after the eruption that covered a portion of the island's north and northeast sides.
