Ziko originally wanted to start a comic series with the Axis Kit after seeing it and loving it. Unfortunately, he already had another comic series in production, Dr. Mata Nui. So he decided to make something simpler, and use his favorite comic style, single panel. He worked hard on creating good backgrounds for the comics, and then editing the sprites slightly anf giving them shadows to give them more dimension. With that, his simple idea began taking a much longer time than he thought they would. But it payed off, so he kept at making them.
