Amanda Palmer coined the term Brechtian Punk Cabaret to describe the music of The Dresden Dolls because she was "terrified" that the press would invent a name that "would involve the word gothic.". It is a subset of the Dark Cabaret movement that has been growing in popularity since the early 1990s. The word 'Brechtian' is a reference to German poet, playwright, and theatre director 'Bertolt Brecht'.
