  • Joseph Loudoun "Old Joe" Jenkins was an elder "hillbilly" in Grantville. He was friends with Jimmy Dick Shaver. Despite being viewed as a hillbilly, Jenkins was a gifted linguist, speaking a number of languages, from Latin to German. Dick considered Jenkins the smartest man he'd ever known. Jenkins and school teacher Emmanuel Onofrio were invited by Dick to translate at a dinner with German philosopher Wilhelm Krieger at Grantville Fine Foods. Jenkins was the first person to talk to Krieger in Latin, which impressed the philosopher and even Onofrio. When Krieger questioned him about Dick's derogative nickname, Jenkins explained to him about modern language in his time as being more "rushed" while completely ignoring what was asked. Throughout the discussion, Jenkins helped translate the conversation between Dick and Krieger. When Dick told Krieger he believed mankind's folly was an uncherished child, Jenkins agreed with Dick's answer. Krieger, who didn't understand Dick's answer, cursed them as "hopeless romantics" before leaving in a huff. Jenkins and his friends laughed this off. This article is a .
