Regulan Bloodworms (Regulani vermis) are small, parasitic worm-like organisms native to planet Regulus II, in the Regulan System. Their bodies are soft and spine-less and they have long thin tendrils protruding from the anterior portion of the body. The Bloodworms are used in medicine, at least by Dr. Phlox, who states that the creatures are quite useful for cleansing the host's lymphatic system.

abstract
  • The Regulan bloodworm is a worm-like lifeform, native to the planet Regulus II. It is described as a soft, spineless creature that is medically useful for cleaning the lymphatic system; however, Regulan bloodworms can also infect sentient races, causing sickness and death. The first reference to Regulan bloodworms was as an insult in the Star Trek episode "The Trouble With Tribbles," written by David Gerrold. Gerrold also wrote an episode for Star Trek: The Next Generation, tentatively titled "Blood and Fire", in which the Enterprise's crew comes across a derelict ship with a dead crew, all killed by a Regulan bloodworm infestation. The episode, which was meant to introduce a science-fiction analogue for the AIDS pandemic of the 1980s, was never produced. The medical use of Regulan bloodworms was suggested or carried out by Doctor Phlox in the episodes "Two Days and Two Nights", "Stratagem" and "Doctor's Orders" of Star Trek: Enterprise. Illustrations of the creatures were also featured in the schoolroom and infirmary of Deep Space Nine. • The Regulan bloodworm was a creature native to a planet in the Alpha Leonis system. It has been described as soft and spineless. Medically, it was quite useful for cleansing a being's lymphatic system. (ENT: "Doctor's Orders") In 2151, when suffering from inadequate hibernation, Doctor Phlox suggested the use of Regulan bloodworms to filter a toxic antigenic compound in Ensign Travis Mayweather's bloodstream. Believing that fresh bloodworms would be more effective than ones from Enterprise's sickbay, Phlox contacted the starship's bridge and gave the order to travel to Regulus at maximum warp. The doctor eventually treated Mayweather with the proper medication. (ENT: "Two Days and Two Nights") In 2152, after Lieutenant Malcolm Reed suffered a wound to his leg, Doctor Phlox treated him with a number of Regulan bloodworms. Despite this, he wished to use even more, but Reed would not allow it, commenting that he still had not found the last one, though Phlox felt it would come out on its own eventually. (ENT: "Dead Stop") In 2153, Captain Jonathan Archer ordered Phlox to develop a memory removal serum to use on the Xindi-Primate Degra, in order to erase his short-term memories so the captain could extract information from him about the location of the Xindi weapon. Archer then told Degra that his memory loss was a side effect of being interrogated with Regulan bloodworms. (ENT: "Stratagem") Korax, a Klingon Defense Force lieutenant and first officer of the IKS Gr'oth, insultingly compared Humans to Regulan bloodworms on Deep Space Station K-7 in a conversation which immediately preceded a barroom brawl in 2268. (TOS: "The Trouble with Tribbles" ; DS9: "Trials and Tribble-ations") Information about Regulan bloodworms was displayed by the computer as an okudagram graphic in Keiko O'Brien's schoolroom on Deep Space 9. (DS9: "A Man Alone", "The Nagus") A graphic of a Regulan bloodworm was also displayed in the infirmary aboard Deep Space 9. (DS9: "Babel", "The Passenger", "Dramatis Personae", "Duet")
