He played junior hockey with the Regina Pats and the Melville Millionaires and then senior with the Prince Albert Mintos. In 1936 he signed as a free agent with the Detroit Red Wings Franks began his National Hockey League career with the Detroit Red Wings in 1937. He only played two games (including a playoff game in 1936-37) with the Wings until 1942-43. In that year he was loaned to the New York Rangers as a wartime replacement for the injured Sugar Jim Henry. He played 23 games for the weak Rangers team and posted a 5-14-4 record. He retired in 1945 after playing for the St. Louis Flyers.
