- Occupational therapy (in the Federation) or ergotherapy (in the Lyran Star Empire) is the use of treatments to develop, recover or maintain the daily living and work skills of people with a physical, developmental or mental condition. It is known to be a patient-centered area of medicine, which focuses on adapting the environment or skills of the patient. Practitioners are known as occupational therapists or ergotherapists.
- Occupational therapy focuses on developing skills and is highly tailored to the individual. The therapist will discuss what needs to be addressed with the autistic person and/or their parents/caregivers. The therapist will then help the autistic person improve skills and find ways to work around difficult tasks (for example, faking eye contact in a way that minimizes discomfort). For children, occupational therapy is mostly based upon play and discussion. It has not been found to have ethical issues, and is generally enjoyable.
- Practitioners of occupational therapy are called occupational therapists. Their role is to work with a client to help them achieve a fulfilled and satisfied state in life through the use of "purposeful activity or interventions designed to achieve functional outcomes which promote health, prevent injury or disability and which develop, improve, sustain or restore the highest possible level of independence." Occupational therapists can work with people of any age.
