- Monolith Productions is a computer software company founded in 1994, mainly specializing in first-person shooter games including No One Lives Forever, Aliens Versus Predator 2, SHOGO: Mobile Armor Division, the Condemned series. Their most recognized product is the LithTech Engine, developed by their subsidiary, Touchdown Entertainment, formerly known as LithTech Inc. This has been through numerous iterations over the years, first being used in SHOGO and Blood II: The Chosen, and later appearing in many games including both the No One Lives Forever games, Contract J.A.C.K, KISS: Psycho Circus, Die Hard: Nakatomi Plaza and Aliens Versus Predator 2. The most recent version of the engine uses a DirectX 9 renderer and includes support for the Havok physics model, including the additional "Havok vehicle kit" which adds support for vehicle behavior. This is the version used by all four F.E.A.R. games, as well as both Condemned games. Monolith was associated with the creation of the F.E.A.R. series, specifically F.E.A.R. First Encounter Assault Recon and F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin, as well as F.E.A.R. 2's expansion, F.E.A.R. 2: Reborn. They acted as a publisher between 1997 and 1999, until they were purchased by Time Warner in 2004, thus ending their relationship with Vivendi Universal. They are the current holders of the F.E.A.R. license, and have declared Vivendi's F.E.A.R. games to not be part of the series canon, thus creating the Monolith Timeline. In mid 2012, Monolith announced their involvement in the creation of the downloadable games, Gotham City Imposters and Guardians of Middle-Earth, both of which released in late 2012. In 2014, they released another of their new masterpiece game, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor on September, making one of the best selling Lord of the Rings-based game in European countries ever since after F.E.A.R. In 2017, they announcing a sequel of Middle-earth titled Shadow of War and excepted a release date on August 22.
