Alphonse was King of France (Alphonse III) and Spain (Alphonse XIV, Spanish: Alfonso XIV). He was born on 20 April 1936 in Rome, son of Prins James of Spain and France (later King James II & I of France and Spain) and his first wife Emmanuelle de Dampierre. When his grandfather, King Alphonse XIII of Spain, inherited the throne on 29 September 1936 as King Alphonse II of France, he moved there with children and grandchildren, including Prince Alphonse. When his father, who was deaf and mute, became King of France and Spain, the two monarchies were run by regents. First the King's brother John became regent, and he retired on 20 April 1961, on Prince Alphonse's 25th birthday, when he took over as regent of France and Spain.

He became King of France and Spain upon the death of his father on 25 March 1975. He died on 30 January 1989 in the Palace of Versailles, Paris. He married on 8 March 1972 to Dona Maria del Carmen Martinez-Bordiu y Franco (born 1951), daughter of Don Cristóbal Martinez-Bordiu, 10th Marquess of Villaverde, and his wife Carmen Franco y Polo, 1st Duchess of Franco, daughter of the prime minister of Spain, Francisco Franco and his wife Carmen Polo y Martinez-Valdés. They divorced in 1982. However, they had the following issue: Francis (1972-1984) Louis (born 1974), who succeeded his father as King of France and Spain as Louis XX & II.
