  • Its hazardous properties led to its denunciation by most 23rd century scientists, but this did not stop David Marcus from secretly using it while trying to solve certain fundamental problems inherent in the Project Genesis matrix. By doing so, he inadvertently doomed the project to failure as it caused the planet formed by the matrix to inherit the unstable properties of the protomatter. • Protomatter was an unstable substance that could be used for a variety of purposes. Due to its volatile nature, however, it was considered highly controversial. (Star Trek III: The Search for Spock; DS9: "Second Sight"; VOY: "Mortal Coil") The Talaxian Neelix had experience working with protomatter sometime before 2371. (VOY: "Mortal Coil") Naturally-occurring protomatter was discovered in a nebula in the Delta Quadrant by the USS Voyager. The Voyager crew attempted to use it as a power source, but these efforts resulted in the (temporary) death of Neelix. (VOY: "Mortal Coil")
  • Protomatter was an exotic form of elementary particles, non-existent in the galaxy, but found in abundance in Otherspace. Although the composition of protomatter was not fully understood, it was actively utilized as a power source by the Charon Dominion by the time of the Extant War. Unlike most forms of exotic matter, protomatter was remarkably stable, and its composition did not degrade or destabilize after extended usage or refining, and thus was not susceptible into becoming a radioactive element.

(Star Trek III: The Search for Spock) In 2370, Professor Gideon Seyetik used protomatter in an attempt to reignite the star Epsilon 119. (DS9: "Second Sight") Also in that year, the Maquis incorporated protomatter in an implosion device designed to overload the impulse drive of the Cardassian freighter Bok'Nor. (DS9: "The Maquis, Part I") In 2373, a Changeling infiltrator impersonating Deep Space 9's Dr. Julian Bashir tried and failed to destroy the Bajoran sun with protomatter, trilithium and tekasite. (DS9: "By Inferno's Light") Protomatter was among the most highly valued commodities in a region of the Delta Quadrant, reputed to be "the best source of energy in the quadrant". Neelix had dealt with protomatter when he worked as a trader, which in one instance led to conflict with the Kazon. He owned a containment cylinder designed to hold a small quantity of protomatter. In 2374, the USS Voyager encountered a class 1 nebula that contained high concentrations of protomatter. Neelix was killed while protomatter was transported into his containment cylinder. Seven of Nine subsequently brought him back to life with her Borg nanoprobes. B'Elanna Torres speculated that a phase variance in the transporter beam was responsible for igniting the sample of protomatter that Neelix had attempted to collect. (VOY: "Mortal Coil") "Proto-matter" was referenced in the first draft script of VOY: "Death Wish", to have been established during the Big Bang. However, this was ultimately replaced with a reference to baryonic particles instead.
  • Protomatter was an unstable substance that could be used for a variety of purposes. Due to its volatile nature, however, it was considered highly controversial. (Star Trek III: The Search for Spock; DS9: "Second Sight"; VOY: "Mortal Coil") During the 23rd century, protomatter was a highly-controlled substance in the Federation. In the 2380s, Dr. David Marcus secretly used protomatter in the construction of the Genesis device, which resulted in an unstable matrix and the ultimate failure of Project Genesis. Dr. Marcus had acquired the protomatter from rogue Starfleet Admiral Androvar Drake, who gave it to him in hopes of developing Genesis into a weapon. (Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, TOS novel: The Ashes of Eden) The Talaxian Neelix had experience working with protomatter sometime before 2371. (VOY: "Mortal Coil") Professor Gideon Seyetik successfully used protomatter to reignite the dead star Epsilon 119 near the Bajoran sector. Dr. William Hoesch would study Seyetik's work as part of the development of his own Genesis device. (DS9: "Second Sight", Star Trek: Pendragon: "Diluvium") Protomatter could also be a deadly weapon. It was used as an explosive, or part of various explosive devices, by many different terrorist groups. The Maquis used a protomatter-based explosive to destroy the Cardassian freighter Bok'nor in 2370. As part of the prelude to the Dominion War, a Founder disguised as Dr. Julian Bashir nearly destroyed the Bajoran system with a protomatter-trilithium device in 2373. (DS9: "The Maquis, Part I", "By Inferno's Light") Naturally-occurring protomatter was discovered in a nebula in the Delta Quadrant by the USS Voyager. The Voyager crew attempted to use it as a power source, but these efforts resulted in the (temporary) death of Neelix. (VOY: "Mortal Coil") The Romulans had experience with protomatter going back at least as far as the 22nd century, and by the 2380s, the Tal Shiar was developing a stockpile of protomatter-based weaponry. (Star Trek: Pendragon: "A Quiet Darkness") An investigation of the site of the Hobus supernova in 2387 discovered traces of protomatter in the stellar remnant. (Star Trek Online)
The exact nature of protomatter was still considered a relative mystery by the Charon Dominion by the time of the Extant War, as its elementary composition bore amalgamated characteristics with antimatter, dark matter, hypermatter and negative matter. Possibly due to this, protomatter was disproportionately dense, with the Charon Dominion even resorting to utilizing anti-gravitational micro-repulsorlift fields in the creation and usage of their phase drives. When subjected to an electromagnetic charge under controlled circumstances, protomatter enabled faster-than-light travel, much like tachyonic hypermatter, but instead of "pushing" a vessel into hyperspace, protomatter "shifted" a vessel into phase space. In contrast to anti-matter fission or hypermatter annihilation, protomatter produced energy by being subjected to a highly ionized electromagnetic charge, which caused protomatter to convert into a radiant, energized state, from which its power would be harnessed toward transit purposes. Protomatter was unique also in that it enabled passage through gravitationally or electromagnetically unstable environments, most notably being the Hellmouth anomaly that bridged realspace with Otherspace, but also through gravity wells, interdiction fields, and even the most severe hyperspace disturbances. Consequently, following the Extant War, protomatter, as well as phase engines, became highly sought after by all participants in the conflict, due to its rarity, expense and difficulty to recreate, and unique transitive advantages. The value of protomatter transcended even further during the Extant War in the aftermath of the Battle of the Otherworld, during which time it was discovered that the Charon were able to harness protomatter in such a manner that they were capable of refining and structuring protomatter into other forms of matter, enabling them to literally create raw materials and resources to suit their needs. The constructs used by the Charon to achieve this were known as Matter Engines, which although were designed by the Dominion, were based upon the principles of Kathol technology.
