MacTerminal was an early communications application programme designed to link the user up with the rest of the world. Back in these days (of the early 1980s), the Internet was still somewhat "primitive" (especially if compared with the Internet of the 2000s). The World Wide Web was nowhere to be seen, and text was still the lingua franca on the Internet in the early days. THE SOURCE, CompuServe Information Services, and Dow Jones News/Retrieval were a few applications that could be used with MacTerminal. Access to BBS services, as well as e-mail, was also possible.

MacTerminal was relatively unfinished; despite this, it could be obtained at stores.
