A Sloop-of-war is the smallest of the warships in the British Navy. Typically fore-and-aft rigged or rigged as a brig-sloop, and with 18 guns or less on a single deck, a sloop is used for carrying despatches to shore posts and for messaging throughout or between fleets. It was commanded by a Commander rather than a Post-captain.
