Erik Dorne, a mystery novel writer, is murdered in his home. His butler, the only witness to the murder is attacked and explains to police that the murderer was a witch. The only other clue is a torn out page of the manuscript of Dorne's latest book alluding to a story about a witch. Joshua Grimm, a writer of literature about witches and demonology, and Mr. Wright, Dorne's publisher, appear at the crime scene to shed some light on why Dorne might have been murdered. Dorne's most recent book was going to reveal the identity of a witch and it is most likely that whoever was to be unmasked murdered Dorne and stole the manuscript for the book.

abstract
  • Erik Dorne, a mystery novel writer, is murdered in his home. Bruce Wayne accompanies Commissioner Gordon on a couple of interviews with potential suspects. First, they visit Dorne's aunt, Melissa Brunt, held much scorn for Dorne, because he never shared his success with her and her two sons, Dorne's cousins. Dorne's aunt, old and twisted from hate, looks like a witch making her a likely suspect in the murder. Second, they visit Dorne's estranged wife, Jane Ware, plays a witch in a stage show making her a likely suspect as well. That night Batman and Robin investigate these two women to see if either was the culprit. Robin procures a wig from Mrs. Ware's dressing room to see if its hairs match hair collected at the crime scene by Bruce Wayne, and Batman searches Mrs. Brunt's home for the stolen manuscript. With the evidence they collected Bruce determines the identity of the killer and thief. Setting a trap for the culprit by claiming there is a duplicate manuscript Batman and Robin wait in Dorne's home for the witch to return. A chase ensues and eventually the ever elusive Batman and Robin are captured by the witch. The witch turns out to be a disguise for Mr. Wright, a reputable publisher, to print subversive pamphlets and distribute them without being detected and potentially ruining his public reputation. Batman and Robin escape their ropes and subdue Wright for eventual capture.
