The horrified League members then return to Earth, while the other aliens flee back to Apokolips. Two years later, the League is led by batman and a clone of Superman, Superboy, is in training to eventually take up his predecessors mantle. Unexpectedly, the emperor of Apokolips, Darkseid, arrives on Earth, launching a brutal assault. Darkseid, who was Kalibka's father, has come to seek revenge for his son's death. The Justice League quickly assemble an emergency team, with Superboy as the reluctant leader. The other members consist of Kid Flash, Timberwolf, Raven, Huntress, and Miss Martian. After the defend the Earth from Darkseid's attack, they are established as new fighting force, and throughout the series, battle Darkseid and various other foes. In the two-part finale, the villain Mr. Freeze's taunts cause Superboy to begin to doubt his leadership skills, while Darkseid prepares himself for another brutal attack. Superboy decides to turn himself over to Darkseid in return for him not harming Earth, despite the other's pleas. However, as Darkseid's forces return to Apokolips, Superboy reveals a bomb strapped to his belt; he detonates it, blowing a hole in the side of the ship. As he escapes by flying through, Darkseid desperately leaps through after him, but Superboy kicks him away and sends him hurtling through space while he returns to Earth as leader of the team. It is discovered that Superman survived his seeming destruction in the series opening, but is held, frozen in ice, by the wicked Brother Blood. Blood reveals that his true plan is to create an army of Superman-like soldiers, similar to Superboy. The team desperately attacks Blood's base, but only discover a Superman decoy and destroy him. In the final battle, Superman breaks out of deep freeze and flies up through the bottom of a lake and through the frozen surface, upon which Brother blood is standing, sending him hurtling away. As Superman returns to the Justice League, Blood reveals his true 'master specimen'; Kalibak. With Brother Blood secretly restoring Kalibak and nursing him slowly back to health, a new villain appears; Gorilla Grodd. Grodd, a fugitive from the secretive Gorilla City, plans to destroy the military installation. The team is joined by Artemis, a former accomplice of Green Arrow, and Aqualad. However, it is slowly revealed that Grodd and Artemis are working together. After the team seemingly collapses and with Superboy missing, Aqualad sets out to personally bring Artemis down. The remaining members of the team then assault Grodd's new haven in Gorilla City, which he has placed under his mind control, while Aqualad and Artemis struggle beneath the city. When Grodd's control device is broken, the other primates rise up against him and retreats into the catacombs below. In the climactic battle, Artemis finally turns against Grodd and shoots him in the leg with her arrow. However, despite his pleas, she shoots him through the throat, executing him before fleeing. The team is also left divided as to whether or not to hunt Artemis down and capture her or to let her go. Brother Blood has finally revived Kalibak, but due to Kalibak having lost an arm in his most recent battle, Blood sends out his henchmen to steal mechanical parts to make a new robotic arm. However, as the team continually foils his plans, Blood hires the mysterious Deathstroke, making a deal that he will restore his missing eye in return for his removal of the team. Later, however, after Kalibak's new arm is assembled, Kalibak turns on brother blood and kills him before setting out on a rampage. deathstroke reluctantly teams up with the team to stop Kalibak. In the final battle, Deathstroke impales Kalibak with sword, but not before Kalibak fatally slashes him across the chest. On Apokolips, Darkseid is informed of his son's final demise, and begins his plan to return to Earth and destroy the team. Alexis Luthor, Lex Luthor's grand-niece, calls upon the Fatal Five, a group of assassins, to take out the team. In Russia, they manage to capture Artemis, and once again the team is torn on what to do. They ultimately decide to attack the enemy base and free Artemis, the majority ruling that she be turned over to the authoritites afterwards. However, Artemis is revealed to be conscious, not in a coma like they had been led to believe. As she and Raven battle, the fight between the Fatal Five and the rest of the team escalates before they are finally subdued and rounded up. Although Artemis overwhlems Raven, she cannot bring herself to kill her and retreats. Luthor encounters her and they began to argue over Artemis not killing Raven, As Luthor lures the team into a trap, Artmeis fires an arrow towards them with a warning note attatch. She then detonates the mines hidden on the ground with her arrows, killing both of them. The team mourns the loss of their friend in the season's final moments. Darkseid finally returns to earth to extract revenge and assembles an evil team of various supervillains, including the Joker and Bane. However, the Joker secretly conspires to overthorw Darkseid. With no apparent criminal activity, the team unanimously agrees to break up and go solo, fighting crime in other cities across the globe alone rather than together. Mere hours after they seperate, the Justice League is monumentally assaulted by Darkseid's new army and are easily captured. Superboy desperately reunites the team one by one, despite some reluctance, and they come together one final time to battle Darkseid. One by one, they defeat most of Darkseid's subordinates before locating his hideout, a space ship laying on a dormant volcano, and set out to attack it. However, this when the Joker makes his move and hijacks Darkseid's ship, planning to flee into space and take over apokolips, organize an army and return to also conquer Earth (this shocks even Batman). Darkseid reluctantly agrees to assist the team in their assault against the ship. Unexpectedly, the volcano finally erupts, and while the Justice League as well as the younger team escape, the Joker and Darkseid remin locked in battle on board the ship and perish. In the final scene on the Watchtower, the team says their goodbyes, while Superman takes a fly across Earth with Superboy.
