abstract
| - The Governorate of Tongass (Russian: Тонгасская губерния, Tongasskaya guberniya), colloquially known as Tongass (Тонгасс), is one of the 18 governorates of the Alaskan Democratic Federative Republic. Tongass is bordered by Sitka to the north, New Caledonia to the south, and Borealia to the east. The majority of Tongass' territory has been dominated by the Tlingit people prior to European contact. Beginning in the 18th Century, the Russian Empire claimed the territory as part of the Oblast of New Russia (within the larger Russian American territory). Much of Russia's activities remained confined to the coast and within the Alexander Archipelago. This changed following the discovery of gold along the Stikine River, resulting in the development of the interior from the 1860s onward. Early during the Alaskan Wars of the 1920s, several battles were fought between the Alaskan Republic and the Commonwealth of Columbia over the control of the Tongass. It was due to this conflict that the territory was divided into Alaskan-controlled Tongass and Columbian-controlled New Caledonia. Following the reunification of Alaska, Tongass remained united with Sitka and Yakutat as the Governorate of New Russia. This changed in the 1940s when the region was partitioned into smaller governorates. The majority of European immigrants to settle within New Russia came from the Nordic Countries and primarily consisted of Finns, Norwegians, and Swedes. The majority of the governorate is comprised of Lutherans, with the Eastern Orthodox Church coming second.
