Tatami Armor was an unusual type of light armor designed to be very portable. Inspired by the woven tatami mats, it was a foldable kimono made from layered burlap. Square armor plates were sewn into the armor combined with small amounts of kusari (chainmail). With the appearance of a kimono, it was ideal for scouts because it was extremely portable and could be donned quickly. Court guards could wear underneath a regular kimono without offending guests.
