They secured numerous footholds on the coasts, but the governor of Britannia Sup. came up with the ingenious idea of having Northern Gaul, Belgica, Saxonum, and Britannia build several groups of small and fast vessels painted sea-green. The generals went through with the idea, and with the camouflaged ships and several land engagements the Vikingi were routed back to their ships, after which they sailed northwest and were forgotten about. Soon these camouflaged ships fell into disuse and were dismantled or scuttled, and the idea of a camouflaged fleet would not be returned to for fifty years.
