The Scepter of Mercy is a fantasy trilogy by Harry Turtledove, published under the pen-name Dan Chernenko by Baen between 2003 and 2005. The series will be reprinted under Turtledove's name by Open Road Media in its entirety in December, 2015. The series is follows the royal family of Avornis as it is changed forever. The series begins with the birth of one of the two main characters in the three book series, Prince Lanius, the son of King Magnus. However, Lanius was fathered with the king's seventh wife, breaking Avornis political and religious taboo against a monarch with more than six wives, thereby calling Lanius' legitimacy into question.
