The Kobali were a humanoid Delta Quadrant species. Their method of reproduction was unique and their most distinguishing characteristic: they added to their population by reanimating the deceased corpses of other species, altering their DNA to transform them into fellow Kobali. They were warp-capable, appearing to have a technology level likely not dissimilar to that of Starfleet. While not generally a hostile species, they were highly protective of their own and would go to great lengths to find and return any member of their society who attempted to flee. Presumably, they only use it on dead individuals in order to avoid conflicts with other species, as assimilating live individuals would be widely perceived as a hostile action.

Die Kobali können Tote noch nach mehr als zwei Wochen wieder zum Leben erwecken. Allerdings ist diese Fähigkeit bei einigen Kulturen geächtet, da dadurch die Totenruhe gestört wird. Da Kobali sich nicht auf natürlichem Weg fortpflanzen können, benötigen sie allerdings Tote, die sie zum Leben erwecken können, um ihre Kultur weiterleben zu lassen. Wenn ein Lebewesen von den Kobali wiederbelebt wird, beginnt sich die DNS zu verändern und der Kobali-Struktur anzupassen. Die Kobali unterscheiden sich von Menschen dadurch, dass sie zum Beispiel ein sechs-lappiges Gehirn und ein binäres kardiovaskuläres System besitzen. Kobali sind glatzköpfig und haben eine hellgraue Haut mit dunklen Flecken. Ihre Hauptnahrung besteht aus einem grauen Brei; für andere Nahrung haben sie anderes Geschmacksempfinden. Den Umwandlungsprozess kann man nicht mehr rückgängig machen, da durch die DNS-Umwandlung zu wenig Original-DNS übrig bleibt. Die äußerliche Erscheinung kann man allerdings dem früheren Aussehen anpassen. Durch die Umwandlung zum Kobali werden dem Lebewesen die meisten Erinnerungen genommen. Es kommt allerdings auch manchmal vor, dass ein Kobali sich an sein früheres Leben erinnert und sich auf die Suche danach begibt. The converts are then adopted in a Kobali family and affectionately raised as one of their own. Although they are still psychologically the same individuals as they were before dying, the changes in anatomy and physiology cause the converts to start perceiving themselves as Kobali (thinking in Kobali language, developing a taste for Kobali food, etc.). Exactly how much they can remember about their previous life is something that varies from individual to individual. Anatomical features of the Kobali include something called a "multi-spherical brain" with six lobes, and a binary cardiovascular system.
