Kärkkäälä is a municipality in Eastern Savonia. The municipality has four areas of dense population:
* Kärkkäälä Proper or Kirkonkylä is situated in the central part of the municipality. It has about 9400 residents, and it has the Municipal Hall, the old church, etc.
* Lempyy-Lyytilänmäki-Salminen area lies in the southern part. With its approximately 11110 residents, it has the biggest population. Salminen lies along the Savonian Railway and has a railway station. Lempyy is south of Salminen, and Lyytilänmäki is west of Lempyy.
* Rieponlahti is situated between Iisvesi and Virmasvesi lakes, in the far north of the municipal area. It has about 4900 residents.
* Halolanmäki lies between Kärkkäälä Proper and Rieponlahti, near Regional Road 547. It has a population of 2800.
