  • Cecil Newton, Sr. is a Pentecostal bishop and pastor as well as a former professional football player who is the father of two National Football League players: Cam Newton and Cecil Newton, Jr.. He is known for his involvement in the 2010 Cam Newton scandal. He was an NFL training camp participant with the 1983 Dallas Cowboys, and also the 1984 Buffalo Bills as a strong safety. In the 2010 scandal, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) determined that Newton, Sr. had engaged in behavior that violated NCAA rules, that was unbeknownst to his son and that did not affect his son's collegiate athletic eligibility. Although the younger Newton had been declared ineligible by association for a few days, he lost no game time.
