First, you should be prepared to put in lots of long hours, learn loads of really complicated stuff, devote heaps of time before having anything fun to play, and be berated by your players for not being more like some other MUD they like better. If you're to be successful at making a MUD, you should first understand that it'll be a lot of work for very little return. You should be able to find enjoyment out of creating the game alone, not playing or administrating it.
