Synopsis
  • Broot is cheerfully reunited with his wife Kattayan-Besh. The two have not seen one another since the day the Gordanians took Kattayan as a slave many years ago. The reunion is bittersweet however as Broot grieves over the fact that his wife is blind and sick from radiation poisoning. In fact, all of the Changralynians down in these minds are prematurely aged due to long term exposure to the deadly energy. Meanwhile on the Omega Men mothership, Doc outfits Primus with a new eye, replacing the cybernetic one he had been using since the siege of Changralyn. Tigorr makes an attempt to alleviate Primus' concerns, but he is no mood for the Karnan's displays of carousal. His only thought is that of his wife Kalista, who he might never see again. Back at the mining colony, Broot can no longer sit by in silence as he watches his brethren embrace the same religious doctrines that had condemned them to this fate. He smashes their holy scriptures and vainly attempts to convince them that they need not resign themselves to such a life. His wife is steadfast in her beliefs however, and invites Broot to stay with them, to learn that they are in fact content with their livelihood. While Broot continues to come to terms with his people's fate, Shlagen is wandering around the upper chambers of the beacon. While attempting to find some food, he unwittingly opens a broadcast channel to the Gordanians. He quickly breaks the connection, hoping that he has not done anything to warrant their attention. The following morning, Broot attends the others as they go to work in the mines. One of the Changralynians, Luukey, attempts to negotiate a narrow passageway, but a seismic rupture causes the cavern to collapse on top of him. Broot burrows through the debris, but he is too late. Luukey is dead. Funeral services are held for the lad, but Broot is disgusted by their complacency. He tries once more to convince them to throw off the shackles of slavery, but they refuse. Broot's words do reach the ears of one miner however, who breaks his ceremonial rune stone. He is not completely convinced of Broot's words, but promises that at the very least he will think upon them. The two shake hands and Broot replies, "That's all I ask -- that you think".
Notes
  • * Final issue written by Roger Slifer. Slifer leaves DC Comics following this issue citing "irreconcilable differences". * This issue establishes that Doc is actually just one of a series of medical specialists, all of whom possess a similar appearance.

  • It is easy to choose the simple path -- to take the path of least resistance in living your lives. But in the end they are empty lives -- enriching neither yourselves nor your spirit.
