Made of smokeless flame, the jinn make up the third class of sentient beings created by God, the other two being angels, made of light, and humans, made of clay. Jinn are usually invisible to humans and have the power to travel large distances at extreme speed. They are thought to live on a parallel plane, prefering remote areas such as mountains, caves, trees, and deserts, where they create their own communities. Specific types of jinn include the shayṭān (satans), the ghūl (ghouls), the marīd and the powerful ‘ifrīt.

There are several classes of jinni, both good and evil, including the Ifrit class. All jinni carry the Mark of the Jinn. In the 15th century, a young woman in France discovered an Ifrit in a rug given to her by an old Moor. She became a jinniyah when the Ifrit misinterpreted her wish. For the next five hundred years, she granted wishes to several people, including Benito Mussolini, Richard Nixon and Fox Mulder, before Mulder – who called her "Jenn" – turned her into a human. For disobeying Allah, he was expelled from Paradise and called "Shayṭān" (Satan).
