Jack Darvill was elected to Parliament in August 3279. In 3282, Darvill ousted Deputy Leader Ursula Everts in a leadership coup. Working under Prime Minister Paul Kilgariff proved to be difficult. Kilgariff was only expected to be leader of the party for a short period of time, however, he overwhelmingly won the general elections and became Prime Minister. While in government, Darvill was not named to the cabinet, a decision that greatly angered him. Following the disastrous 3287 elections, Darvill forced Kilgariff to resign. In the resulting leadership election, Darvill was elected leader.

Following the elections, Darvill successfully negotiated for the Liberals to remain in the cabinet. Darvill himself was named Minister of Trade and Industry. His successes soon stopped and within two years, support for the party hit an all time low. In 3291, the Liberals suffered their worst defeat since they entered Parliament in 3260 and Darvill was forced to resign as leader.
