He was notably the first commanding officer of the USS Enterprise in the late 2240s. Prior to the Enterprise, he commanded the USS Tiberius, and later rose to positions as a Starfleet commodore, and Federation ambassador.

During the 2240s, April oversaw the construction of many of the components for the Constitution-class vessels at the San Francisco Navy Yards. He was then given command of the Enterprise for its first five-year mission from 2245 to 2250 on which his wife served as the chief medical officer.
