Synopsis
  • Deborah Dancer and Dmitri Mishkin are assaulted by Edward Trane, a vampirized former ally to Andrew Bennett. Trane kidnaps Deborah, and explains to her that Bennett is responsible for turning him into a vampire. Seventy years ago, they were both captured by the Blood Red Moon and imprisoned together until Bennett grew hungry and betrayed him. Trane grew into a monster craving revenge over the decades, and finally returned to punish Bennett. He sets a trap and imprisons Andrew with Deborah, so she will see him for the monster he truly is. Bennett begins to starve over the course of several days, although he refuses to eat Deborah. Finally they stage a fight between themselves and Trane enters to intervene, but Deborah stakes him through the chest. As Trane lies dying, Bennett explains that it was the Blood Red Moon who turned him. They tricked Trane into believing it had been Bennett, then tricked Bennett into believing Trane had died. In his dying moments Trane realizes that there was no justification for the murders he committed, but there is no redemption.
quotation
  • Absolution, I knew, was not mine to offer. In the final tally, even a vampire must take responsibility for his own deeds -- or misdeeds.
