The siege of Mandalore, which engulfed the Outer Rim world of Mandalore, was one of the final battles of the Clone Wars. Former Jedi Padawan Ahsoka Tano and Clone Captain Rex led a Galactic Republic battalion of clone troopers to apprehend the ex–Sith Lord Darth Maul, who controlled Mandalore by proxy via a puppet leader, Prime Minister Almec. Although Rex and Tano nearly succeeded in their mission, Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine's issuance of Order 66 disrupted their efforts. Instead of murdering Maul, Tano elected to save Rex's life, and both they and Maul escaped from Mandalore as the planet descended into chaos. The Republic's successor state, the Galactic Empire, seized control of Mandalore and occupied the world, establishing an Imperial Academy there.
