The Kazakhs were one of the successor states of the Golden Horde. After the fall of the Khanate of Kazan under the Russians, and through an alliance with the Khanates of Sibir and Crimea, and the Ottomans, the Kazakhs were the main opposition to the Russians, and by the mid 17th century, they had occupied the territories of Kazan and Aztrakhan.
