Gilbert is the only man in professional hockey history to win a Stanley Cup with both New York teams, accomplishing the feat with the N.Y. Islanders in 1982 and 1983 and the N.Y. Rangers in 1994. He played in 837 NHL games in his career, scoring 150 goals and 228 assists. On Friday, June 5, 2009, Gilbert was relieved of his coaching duties as his contract was not renewed by the Toronto Maple Leafs. In Gilbert's third and final season with the Marlies, the team went 39-29-5-7 in the regular season, and then went on to lose in six games to the Manitoba Moose in the North Division semifinal.
