Karen Tyler was a Grantville resident. She joined its nascent military, and spotted for sniper Julie Sims at the Battle of Jena. Tyler's pragmatism about the threat helped Sims convince Mike Stearns that both perfectly understood what the task of sniping entailed. Tyler had received her training from Dr. James Nichols. She acquitted herself well during the battle. Tyler served as Sims's spotter at the Battle of Alte Veste, including the assassination attempt on Albrecht von Wallenstein. The attempt left Wallenstein with a broken jaw.
