In 2290, the T'Ong was dispatched on a "crucial" long-range mission from the Klingon Empire under the command of Captain K'Temoc. Due to the long travel time involved, the T'Ong's crew was placed into cryogenic suspension for the journey. The crew awakened soonafter unaware that the Empire and the Federation were no longer at war. The cruiser returned and was heard from in 2365, when the ship sent out an automated signal directed to the Klingon High Command.

Noch vor Erfüllung der Mission und während die Crew sich noch im Tiefschlaf befindet schließen die Föderation und das Klingonische Reich mit dem Khitomer-Abkommen Frieden. Das Schiff treibt weiter durchs All bis die Mannschaft im Jahr 2365 reaktiviert wird und Kurs auf die Kolonien im Boradis-System nimmt. Um Kampfhandlungen zu vermeiden, wird die Sonderbotschafterin K'Ehleyr mit einer Kontaktaufnahme betraut und mit einer Klasse-8-Sonde von Sternenbasis 336 zur USS Enterprise geschickt, um diese auf das Aufeinandertreffen mit der T'Ong vorzubereiten. Ihre Hoffnung, dass die Mannschaft noch nicht erwacht sei, bestätigt sich nicht, so dass die T'Ong das Feuer auf die Enterprise eröffnet. Aufgrund der fortschrittlicheren Technologie gelingt es die gegenüber Gammastrahlung ineffiziente Tarnung der T'Ong zu durchdringen und das Schiff so zu verfolgen. Indem sich Worf und K'Ehlyr als kommandierende Offiziere der Enterprise ausgeben, gelingt es ihnen, den Konflikt abzuwenden und sinnloses Blutvergießen zu verhindern. In 2290, under the command of Captain K'Temoc the T'Ong was dispatched on a long term mission. Due to the length of the mission the crew were placed in cryogenic suspension. In 2365, the T'Ong returned from its mission in 2365. Due to the crew's lack of knowledge of the change in Federation-Klingon relations it was thought that the ship would have to be destroyed to prevent it from attacking nearby Federation colonies, however this was avoided when K'ehleyr and Worf convinced K'Temoc that the two former adversaries were at peace. Realizing the danger to lightly-defended Federation colonies in the sector, including those in the Boradis system, the USS Enterprise-D was dispatched to intercept the T'Ong, with Federation special emissary K'Ehleyr as an adviser. It was initially believed that the destruction of the T'Ong was unavoidable once the revived Klingons were confronted by their former adversary. The Enterprise confronted the T'Ong when Lt. Commander Data picked it up on sensors but the T'Ong fired its phasers at the Enterprise causing no damage to its shields. The T'Ong then cloaked and went to warp. The Enterprise over took the Klingon ship at warp 8, during which the T'Ong dropped out of warp and decloaked. The T'Ong fired its phasers again causing no damage to the Enterprise's shield's. The T'Ong's crew eventually stood down when Lieutenant Worf masqueraded as the captain of the Enterprise and convinced Captain K'Temoc that the Federation and the Klingon Empire were now at peace. K'Ehleyr took command of the vessel and assimilated the crew to the 24th century while waiting for the IKS P'Rang to escort the ship back to Qo'noS. (TNG: "The Emissary" )

Because the Federation and the Empire were enemies in the early 2290s it was widely suspected that when the crew of the T'Ong were awoken from cryo-suspension they would attack the colonies.
