When Denmark surrended to the Third Reich in 1940, Great Britain invaded the islands and established an airstrip and a naval base, for controlling the North Atlantic. Britain withdrew from the islands in 1949, but kept control of the naval base and airport up to 1990. In 1949, the Faroe Islands were established as an independent republic under British tutelage.
