It worked under the jurisdiction of the United Nations Space Force and though it was chartered by the United Nations of Terra, its area of influence often extended throughout the Sol system. (FASA RPG module: Star Fleet Intelligence Manual: Agent's Orientation Sourcebook) Despite this being the case, it was known that certain TIA agents tended to operate beyond Terra's borders and held little authority in such cases. Furthermore, whilst they were noted for their helpful attitudes, these agents tended to not provide any form of assistance or hard data. (FASA RPG module: Star Fleet Intelligence Manual) It served as Humanity's primary intelligence service for sven decades after its creation. Some procedural changes did take place during Colonel Green's War when it become apparent that there was a need to improve the confidentiality of its communications. Despite numerous breaks in their plans made by enemy decoders, the TIA served its purpose well during that war. However, it was rapidly seen that the organization was incapable of serving the growing intelligence needs of Terra after first contact came with the Vegan Tyranny, Tellarites, Vulcans, Andorians, Alpha Centaurans and Orions. (FASA RPG module: Star Fleet Intelligence Manual: Agent's Orientation Sourcebook) After contact was made with the various races, it as decided there was a need for a more effective intelligence department. As such, the duties of the TIA was supplemented on Stardate 0/8910 with the formation of Starfleet Command and its own intelligence wing. Many of the TIA's own personnel were transferred to this new agency though the organization still remained though it had no legal authority outside the Terran system. It was used for low-echeon or localized intelligence duties on Terra itself. (FASA RPG module: Star Fleet Intelligence Manual: Agent's Orientation Sourcebook) Starfleet Intelligence was known to had been courteous to the Terran Intelligence Agency and often informed them of any operations in the Sol system though the reverse was rarely true and it was known that there was professional rivalry between the two that was not friendly. (FASA RPG module: Star Fleet Intelligence Manual) TIA maintained offices on Terra, Luna, Mars, Ceres, Ganymede and Titan. There were rumors that the agency had established an office on Alpha Centauri though this was later proven to be false. (FASA RPG module: Star Fleet Intelligence Manual)
